7-Zip

I have started using Windows Vista, build 5270, as my primary operating system.  The experience is not exactly painless, but there is nothing like dog-fooding what I am currently training developers on.

One frustration has been the fact that the built-in zip compression functionality freezes Windows Explorer.  To get around this, I downloaded 7-Zip and it has proved to be all I need on Vista as well.  I have been using it for some time now on my Windows 2003 laptop and it is good to see that it works on Vista out of the box.  It includes support for RAR, something I encounter more and more with Virtual Machine images.

(It was mentioned on the SourceForge email list this month as one of the top apps.  So was PDFCreator, another open source utility I previously mentioned.)
