Applying the Story of Jonah to Life Google Search It Last night the family got together to watch Big Ideas' Jonah (see Family Movie Night at the Michaelis'). Aside from the fact that the movie was enjoyable, I was surprised that the key message brought out in the movie was one of being compassionate and merciful just as God is compassionate and merciful.  Now I realize that this moral is perhaps obvious to even the not so bright light-bulbs among us but I confess compassion and mercy were not the main themes I would have caught on to from the story of Jonah.  For me the message of Jonah was usually one of being called to be God's messenger and not ignoring the call.  Obviously the ideas of compassion and mercy came up but they just weren't the focus.  It was refreshing to be reminded of how there is no need to have a Master's of Divinity to see the simple truths within God's word and that the Bible always has more to teach even from the stories that are familiar. Next step:  Look for the areas in my life where I can be more compassionate and merciful and be more mindful of the fact that I am constantly in need of God's compassion and mercy. 4:20:50 PM   []    comment []

Family Movie Night at the Michaelis' Google Search It This past week Elisabeth had the great idea of doing a movie night at home with the family.  For the first movie night we chose Big Ideas' It was a lot of fun and a great success.  After finishing off some pizza for dinner Daddy got Benjamin ready for bed while Mommy made the popcorn.  We then all gathered on Mommy and Daddy's bed (in front of the only TV in the house).  The movie was a little long for Benjamin and got distracted a little but we all enjoyed it and I expect it will become somewhat of a regular family tradition that can continue on for quite some time (at least until we the children become teenagers I expect. 4:05:14 PM   []    comment []
