Microsoft Innovation: Reinventing What Already Exists
Google Search It

We have seen a consistent message from Microsoft, especially during the height of their legal battles, that innovation is key and that they will fight anything that will inhibit their ability to innovate.  OK, I can understand that but lets consider Microsoft's approach to innovation.  It appears to me that frequently Microsoft "innovates" by including existing functionality in their own product in ways that have very little (if any) new innovation.

Now I realize that the goal is to generate revenue and that this sometimes involves taking market share away from others but this seems to occur way to often at Microsoft and often needlessly.  I believe that there are tons of applications and features that are completely absent from the market that there is no other company tackling or at a minimum, not tackling well.  Before Microsoft prioritizes on "innovation" through copy how bout they spend more resources on implementing what there are not current solutions for.  Hmmmm....  I am somewhat torn about this because I am often gratefully that Microsoft provided a solution even when there was an existing product in the space because it is one less thing to install... I just get it.  Providing a full UML designer (not Visio) for example rather than leaving me with the extremely expensive Rational XDE tool or expecting me to use the scratch pad of Visio.

SQL Server Yukon Due End 2004
Google Search It

Obviously dates from Microsoft (or any software development project for that matter) are not very accurate.  But I read recently that the scheduled date for the next version of SQL Server (code name Yukon) is at the end of 2004.
